Can You Use House Paint on Polytab Mural Cloth?

One of the most common questions artists ask is whether standard house paint can be used on polytab mural cloth. The answer is yes—and in fact, I frequently recommend using quality exterior/interior house paints such as Behr premium plus for mural projects.

House paint offers several advantages for mid to large-scale murals. It's affordable, widely available, durable, and comes in an enormous range of colors. Behr paint, in particular, i have used on 90% of my projects.

Before painting, however, I recommend applying a light coat of primer to the polytab. Products such as Kilz 2, Bulls Eye 1-2-3, or artist acrylic gesso work well. Priming helps prevent the paint from soaking through the fabric and reaching the back side of the material. It also creates a more uniform surface, allowing the paint to sit on top of the polytab rather than being absorbed into the fibers.

The good news is that polytab accepts primer extremely well. A thin, even coat is usually all that's needed to create an ideal painting surface. Once primed, Behr and other acrylic-latex house paints adhere beautifully and can produce vibrant, long-lasting results.

If you're looking for a cost-effective way to paint a large mural, a lightly primed sheet of polytab combined with quality exterior house paint is a proven combination that many muralists use successfully.
