What's the best pavement Paint for Ground Murals

What's the best pavement Paint for Ground Murals

When you tackle large-scale outdoor project like a crosswalk art installation or a multi-colored plaza you need paint that can survives real-world punishment is one of the hardest challenges you will encounter.
As muralists and pavement artists, our natural instinct is to reach for products that offer endless color swatches. We want vibrant gradients, nuanced pastels, and saturated highlights.

I learned my lesson several times in my journey to find a solution. this is the before and after of my garage painting that was meant to be temporary peeled a little faster than expected. I used (Behr Garage Epoxy)

Products like Tuff-Crete, Benjamin Moore’s Command paint, and standard Behr garage floor epoxy are widely available and come in hundreds of custom-tinted shades, but on high-traffic ground murals, they pale in comparison to industrial pavement systems like StreetBond.

Standard latex and garage formulas merely create a film that rests on top of the substrate. When tires turn, weather hits, or hundreds of pedestrians drag abrasive grit across them, they scrape, peel, and flake.

From my trail and error, as well as close friends, I have found that StreetBond and Acrytech Court Coating are the best solutions for the artists needs. I created a youtube video about the experience of using the material by GAF and how it weathered on over a year and half on heavy car and foot traffic.

The StreetBond Advantage

For exterior concrete walkways, plazas, and decorative intersections, industrial solutions like StreetBond (SB120 and SB150) significantly outperform retail options:

  • Multi-Part Chemistry: StreetBond operates as a catalyzed system where you combine Part A with Part B (the catalyst) and then incorporate dedicated colorant pigments. The chemical reaction during curing transforms the liquid into a rock-hard, crystalline structure that bonds directly with the concrete pores.

  • Integral Anti-Slip Texture: Unlike traditional paints where you must manually broadcast silica sand into wet paint (often resulting in clumping or bare spots), StreetBond formulas feature pre-suspended aggregate. Once dry, it creates an even, sandpaper-like finish that prevents slipping in wet weather. Note that this coarse texture means it cannot be sprayed through traditional airless rigs—you must roll it using heavy-nap rollers.

  • The Artist’s Palette Workaround: Because industrial lines do not come with hundreds of pre-mixed tint options, you have to mix your palette manually. StreetBond offers bright primary colorants—such as vivid blues, yellows, and oranges. By treating these pigments like raw artistic paints, you can blend custom secondary and tertiary shades in smaller working pails.

  • Two-Part Clear Sealer: Concrete projects benefit heavily from an extra layer of defense. A two-part concrete sealer (diluted with water and sprayed via a chemical tank sprayer) locks in the pigment, guards against organic staining, and makes post-event cleaning or power washing seamless.

StreetBond SB120  VS SB150

SB150 is for Pedestrian and Vehicle traffic

StreetBond® SB 150 is engineered for both pedestrian and vehicular traffic applications. It is widely used on asphalt parking lots and crosswalks like I did  with my initial mural with the product.

SB120 is for Pedestrian and Vehicle traffic

StreetBond® SB 120 is formulated specifically for pedestrian applications and areas with very low to no vehicular traffic. I used this solution in my current pavement mural where there is no vehicular traffic.
